Israel – Palestine
a bloody conflict through 100 years.
A battle for territory and human rights
What is the background to the conflict?
By Ole Olsen: Chairman of the UN Federation’s Human Rights Committee
The violence is largely a result of internationally supported Jewish immigration into Palestine, which has marginalized Palestinians for decades. Approximately half of the approximately 12 million Palestinians are refugees today.
The UN plan was a two-state solution. It was not realized in 1948, and since 1967 Israel has occupied the remaining territories, Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, building settlements in the latter and relocating around 700,000 Israelis.
Since 1994, there has been very limited autonomy for Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. Since 2006, Israel isolated Gaza from the outside world after Hamas took power there following democratic elections.

Bombing
of civilians
Hunger
The current acts of war.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas’ military branch in Gaza launched a violent attack into Israel, killing nearly 1,200 in the border area, mostly civilians. 250 were taken hostage.
The Israeli response has since been heavy bombardment and a ground offensive that has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza, at least 70% of them civilians. Israel has only allowed very limited supplies of emergency aid and almost all Palestinians in Gaza have been displaced by Israel to other parts of Gaza.
The warfare is considered by the International Court of Justice to possibly be in the nature of genocide and the International Criminal Court ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, among others.
In the West Bank, Israel has increased settlement activity and repression. Over 3,000
Palestinians have been detained without charge or trial. Some 6,000 were already imprisoned for resisting the occupation.
